Repair vs. Replacement: The Honest Truth

We are repairmen first, salesmen second. If we can fix your opener safely and cost-effectively, we will. However, repairs aren’t always the best value.

We Recommend Repair If:

• The unit is under 10 years old.
• The cost of repair is less than 50% of a new unit.
• The safety sensors are present and working.

We Recommend Replacement If:

• The unit is over 15 years old. (Parts are scarce, and other components will fail soon).
• No Safety Eyes: Units made before 1993 lack federal safety mandates. We cannot legally repair these sensors; they must be updated.
• Safety Failure: If the unit fails the “reversal test” even after adjustment, it is dangerous and must be replaced.

Preventative Maintenance for Openers

To keep your opener running smoothly:

1. Test the Safety Reversal: Place a 2x4 on the ground. Close the door. It should hit the wood and reverse. If not, call us.
2. Check the Balance: Pull the red cord and lift the door manually. If it’s heavy, the opener is overworking and will burn out. You need a spring adjustment.
3. Lubricate the Rail: (For screw or chain drives) Apply a little low-temp grease once a year. Never use WD-40 on an opener.
