Why Won’t My Garage Door Close (and the Light Blinks)?

When your door reverses right before it closes — or won’t close at all while the opener light flashes — the two photo-eye sensors near the floor aren’t “seeing” each other. The opener is doing its job: refusing to close a heavy door onto a possible obstruction. The break in that invisible beam usually comes from one of a few causes:

• A sensor got bumped out of alignment (a broom, a bike, a bag brushed it).
• The lenses are dirty, sunlit, or spider-webbed, blurring the beam.
• A wire is cut, corroded, or loose — common in garages exposed to weather or rodents.
• The photo-eye itself has failed and needs replacing.

Should You Realign or Replace the Sensor?

Not every blinking light means a new part. Our technicians diagnose the whole circuit and do the least-invasive fix that actually solves it:

• Realign sensors that are simply knocked off-angle (the LEDs should glow steady, not flicker).
• Clean and re-aim lenses fighting glare or grime.
• Repair or re-run wiring that’s damaged — often the real culprit behind an intermittent close.
• Replace failed photo-eyes with matched units when the sensor is truly dead.

We Always Test the Auto-Reverse

Because these sensors are a federally mandated safety feature (since 1993), we never just “make it close.” After the repair we verify both the photo-eye beam and the mechanical auto-reverse — laying a solid object in the door’s path to confirm it stops and reverses.
